Miwa Komatsu: Beyond the Eyes marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in Europe.
Presented at MUSEC – Museo delle Culture in Lugano – from 23 July to 25 October 2026, the exhibition brings together around 30 works created between 2012 and 2026, including a selection made specifically for the exhibition.
Across painting and three-dimensional works in wood, porcelain and resin, the exhibition traces more than a decade of Miwa Komatsu’s artistic practice. Guardian spirits, sacred animals and other symbolic forms recur throughout her work, reflecting influences from Japanese mythology, folklore and spiritual traditions.
Meditation forms an important part of Miwa Komatsu’s creative practice and her exploration of the relationship between humanity, nature and the spiritual world.
The gaze is also central to the exhibition, recurring across paintings and sculptural works as a point of connection between the artwork and the viewer.
Curated by Nora Segreto, Beyond the Eyes unfolds across five thematic sections: ‘The Gaze’, ‘Living Nature’, ‘Guardian Spirits’, ‘The Power of Colour’ and ‘Active Silence’. Together, they offer a view of the themes and visual language that have developed throughout her practice.
